McDougall’s latest book culminates with all three of these “donks”, as he calls them, taking part in the World Championship Pack Burro Race, in the Colorado Rockies.īurro racing, McDougall explains, was supposedly invented by prospectors scouring the Rocky Mountains for gold and silver during the Wild West era. ![]() As well as his wife and two kids, there are cats, chickens, ducks, sheep, goats, geese (not the Canadian variety) and three donkeys – Sherman, Flower and Matilda. Originally a suburban kid from Philadelphia, McDougall now lives very close to animals on a smallholding in the backwoods of southern Pennsylvania. ![]()
